This report provides insight into challenges & solutions facing women statewide.
A landmark report – the first ever to analyze key economic and wellbeing indicators for women and share results in a county-by-county format – Status of Women in Alabama (2020) serves as an important benchmark on the issues most impacting Alabama women and how these issues affect our economy. Moreover, this research underscores the importance of what we’re doing. We’ve identified the problems. We know the challenges. Most importantly, we recognize that this moment in time is the ideal time to address them. Consider the following:
- Women with infants under 12 months-old, who wish to enter Alabama’s struggling workforce, face annual costs averaging $5,858, nearly 17% of Alabama women’s median annual earnings.
- The gender wage gap in Alabama is wider than in most states and the national average. Women in Alabama earn only 73 cents for every dollar a man earns, compared to 82 cents for U.S. women overall.
- 3 out of 4 families in Alabama have a female breadwinner.
- As of 2020, of the 140 members of the Alabama Legislature, 22 are women, just 15.7% of the legislative body.
