POLICY PRIORITIES
A bold and non-partisan strategy, our Agenda for Women is a platform for all Alabamians seeking to build a stronger state and accelerate women’s economic opportunity by prioritizing gender equity.
With more than 100,000 job openings in the state and more than 80,000 women unable to work because of various barriers, it’s simple math: All of us benefit if we can help more women enter the workforce.
The Agenda for Women urges Alabama lawmakers to advance equity by enacting policies that support accessible quality child care, equitable wages, healthcare access, and inclusive workforce development.
According to our report, Status of Women in Alabama, raising Alabama women’s labor force participation rate to the national average, currently the second lowest in the country, could add 80,941 women to the workforce. This would simultaneously move the state closer to its workforce goals and women and their families closer to economic security
With women bearing the brunt of the pandemic and disproportionately being impacted by unemployment, it is vital to address women’s unique needs and barriers with practical policy initiatives like those presented in the Agenda for Women
The time for change is now.
The future of Alabama’s economic growth hinges on a groundbreaking initiative – the EssentiAL Plan. This comprehensive advocacy strategy aims to permanently change the economic game for women through data-driven policy reforms and grassroots community building. Central to this plan is an unprecedented call on state leaders to invest $250 million to enhance women’s economic outlook, access to opportunities, and retention in quality jobs. Through the EssentiAL Plan, we will:
access to quality child care through increased funding for businesses and child care providers by passing the Child Care Tax Credit bill.
public investments that drive women into in-demand careers through the state's community college appropriation.
the wage gap by strengthening equal pay protections.
