CAPITOL HEELS EVENT

Women’s Foundation of Alabama holds Capitol Heels Advocacy Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The Women’s Foundation of Alabama rallied on the steps of the state Capitol Thursday.

The annual event focuses on a range of issues impacting economic opportunity for women. This year’s rally focused specifically on child care tax credits.

The foundation says its goal is to elevate the voices of women and families, as child care is essential for women to enter and remain in the workforce.

“Alabama doesn’t work unless it works for women,” said Melanie Bridgeforth, President and CEO of Women’s Foundation of Alabama.

State House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter said in 2022, nearly 85,000 Alabama families needed access to child care but no quality or affordable options were available in their communities.

“That’s something that we plan on changing this session,” Ledbetter said.

“No mother and no family, in this state or in this country, should have to make a choice between breaking even to pay for child care or staying at home,” said state Rep. Anthony Daniels. “It’s time that the Alabama House, the Senate and the governor’s office deliver this piece of legislation.”
